Measuring the BTUs lost to improper Venting of a Battery Box

Fill out the form with the specs from your current hydrogen venting system, assuming the vents are separated (not touching) and or not conductive. First we determine the flow rate, then we determine the loss of heat due to that flow rate.

The rate at which air flows depends on several factors, the inside and outside air temperatures, the area of the openings, and the height difference between the top and bottom openings. The 1997 ASHRAE Fundamentals handbook gives the following relationship:
Q = 60 * Cd * A * sqrt(2 * g * (Hn - Hb) * ((Ti - To) / Ti))
where
Q = flow rate in cfm,
Cd = 0.65 (for unobstructed openings),
A = opening area, square feet,
Ti = indoor temp (Rankine),
To = outdoor temp (Rankine),
Hn = height of "neutral pressure point" (for simple systems, assume
1/2 way between top and bottom openings).
Hb = height of bottom opening
g = gravity.
Obviously those units are a bit different, so we convert them to U.S. customary units:
Q = stack effect draft/draught flow rate, ft3/s
A = area, ft2
C = discharge coefficient (usually taken to be from 0.65 to 0.70)
g = gravitational acceleration, 32.17 ft/s2
h = height or distance, ft
Ti = average inside temperature, °F
To = outside air temperature, °F
